Robots take centre stage at Tokyo's annual design expo. Full Story: Robots took centre stage of a Tokyo design expo on Monday as they sang, clapped, kicked, played guitar and even wooed visitors. More than 1,300 individuals or teams of designers, architects, musicians and artists participated in the Tokyo Designers Week 2014 with their the latest avant garde art and design works. Robots ranged from a choir of robot singers, Seamoons, performing their very mechanical harmony using artificial lungs and vocal cords to MMI, a guitar playing automaton. But the highlight of the show was Asuna, a humanoid android capable of delicate facial expression. Creator A-Lab, a robot developing company, called her "an everlasting girl". "At first, I thought she was human, but I soon figured out she was a doll," said 27-year-old visitor Kazunari Sato said, only to be corrected by Asuna. "Oh, sorry, an android," Sato said. Another 27-year-old visitor Yuki Ariga said the robot resembled a real woman. "She moves like a human and the texture is very like a real skin. She looks like a real one," Ariga said. Not everyone understood some of the artistic themes behind the robots. "I don't understand the artistic concept. I guess the one who made it has a talent that I don't have," said 33-year-old visitor Rumiko Kudo about a display called "Clapping Men." Kenji Kawasaki, chairman of the Design Association non-profit organisation, who first started the exhibition 29 years ago as small tents of affiliated shops, said the exhibition was given a new name this year to reflect its size and diversity - Tokyo Genius Expo. "From architecture to entertainment, a great number of artists are participating in this event, so we had to call it a 'genius' expo rather than a design, art, or music expo in order to embrace their diversity," Kawasaki said. Organizers expect about 120,000 visitors to visit the expo's 10 indoor and outdoor pavilions, in central Tokyo's Gaien Park from October 25 to November 3. The 10-day event was also held overseas in exhibitions in Milan and London and organisers are hoping to expand to New York next year. (22 Dec 2015) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: AP CLIENTS ONLY AP TELEVISION - AP CLIENTS ONLY Tokyo - 22 December 2015 1. Various of Kengo Kuma, designer of the newly selected design for 2020 Tokyo Olympics stadium, explaining his design at a news conference 2. Cutaway of screen showing design 3. Cutaway of photographers 4. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Kengo Kuma, designer, newly selected design for 2020 Tokyo Olympics stadium: "As this project is under so much scrutiny not only from all of Japan but also from all around the world, I do feel the heaviness of responsibility I now bear." 5. Cutaway of photographers 6. Wide of news conference 7. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Kengo Kuma, designer, newly selected design for 2020 Tokyo Olympics stadium: "Zaha's design was much taller in height compared to this one. We aim to follow a design which is ecologically friendly as much as possible. For that, we reduced the height as well as using wood as its construction material to give the feel of ecological friendliness and a sense of comfort for the people." 8. Wide of news conference 9. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Kengo Kuma, designer, newly selected design for 2020 Tokyo Olympics stadium: "The area surrounding the (construction) site is a green area, like a forest. So, this time, we weren't looking to create a remarkable or outstanding building, but we aimed for an architecture structure that integrates with its surrounding area, with the forest. And, I believe that will be the legacy (of this stadium) and that is the concept of 'Japaneseness' (in design)." 10. Various of Kuma and Japan Sport Council officials posing for photographers STORYLINE: Japan chose a scaled-down design on Tuesday for the showcase main stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, five months after scrapping an earlier plan by renowned architect Zaha Hadid as too costly. The new design, by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, will still cost 153 billion yen (1.26 billion US dollars) to design, build and maintain. The Hadid proposal would have cost 252 billion yen (2.1 billion US dollars), making it the most expensive stadium ever built. Kuma's combined steel and wood structure, with a relatively flat roof with shrubbery along its outer concourses, seems to echo traditional temple designs. It stands 50 metres (164 feet) tall, with a centre athletic ground sunk below the surface. Kuma appeared at a news conference where he talked about his design, saying it wasn't a construction made to impress people with its shape, but something that will blend in with the surrounding area. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory. Aman Tokyo, a chic resort in Tokyo, Japan, with lighting design by Lighting Planners Associates, took home an IALD Award of Merit – one of two they received that evening. The lighting of Aman Tokyo, set atop a skyscraper in the middle of the city, takes Japanese-style design seriously. The team of designers from Lighting Planners Associates embrace the shifting, delicate balance of natural and artificial light in the space with a design that gives careful consideration to brightness and color temperature, as well as seasonal and daily changes. The 33F lobby is a grand space with luminous 3000K walls wrapped in washi glass – a layered laminate with Japanese washi paper pressed within its layers to diffuse light. The 6-story high, vaulted ceiling features a tent membrane made luminous by 4200K and 3000K 32W FL tubes set at a 1.2m pitch. Controls gently shift the light during day and night, simulating daylight or providing softer lighting at dusk when the Tokyo nightscape is on display. To remove unnecessary shadowing and reduce reflection in the windows, on-site usage mockups and maintenance experiments helped designers rearrange luminaires and configure the system structure. “Dark finishes, linear lighting and backlit elements provide a result in keeping with the Japanese theme and the luxurious setting,” praised one judge. “The design succeeds in achieving a fine balance.” At the bar, designers carefully adjusted pendant height to reduce glare and reflection. To accommodate the dining tables, the designers minimized the vertical luminance level near the windows so guests can enjoy the view over Tokyo. Cove lighting around the columns and decorative lighting are moderated appropriately at dinner time. To ensure sufficient table lighting, glareless spotlights are mounted within ceiling louvers. “Clean, well-integrated lighting establishes links to Japanese tradition,” another judge wrote. “A consistent approach towards daylight strengthens the project’s sense of place.” Similarly, no downlights are used in the pool area to let guests fully relax and enjoy the Tokyo nightscape from the water. During the day, daylight is adjusted with blinds; at night, cove lighting and floor stands add soft ambiance. Underwater linear LEDs along the bottom edge of the pool add another indirect lighting element so the environment is not too bright at night. Diffused, indirect lighting provides the right light while making it difficult to see in from outside.
