  • Zaha Hadid Architects launches campaign to reinstate scrapped Tokyo stadium design

Zaha Hadid Architects has released this movie detailing its design for the scrapped Tokyo 2020 Olympic stadium, which it describes as "the only way to achieve value for money in the market". The film, which is over 20 minutes long, explains the decisions made during the two-year-long design process that lead to the current proposal, which was dropped last month by Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe citing spiralling costs. It also argues that starting again with a new design will not save the Japanese taxpayer any money so it could end up costing more in the long term, and the firm urges the government to reconsider its decision. "The design should be seen as the only way to achieve value for money in the market," says Zaha Hadid Architects in the film. The estimated cost of the Japan ...

  • Bunkyo Civic Center - Tokyo - 文京シビックセンター - 4K Ultra HD

The Bunkyo Civic Center is, as far as we are concerned, the best spot in Tokyo to shoot Mt Fuji behind Shinjuku’s major skyscrapers. Open year round, and free for all since 1994, the Bunkyo Civic Center had a rather rocky start and today’s design is actually very different from the initial one! Indeed the first building, which opened in April 1959, was found in 1977 in violation of Japanese fire safety regulations and it was decided that it would make economic sense to blow-up the whole building and make a new one instead! Several years later, in 1994, that which was once the Bunkyo City Hall became the Bunkyo Civic Center as we know it today. Aman Tokyo, a chic resort in Tokyo, Japan, with lighting design by Lighting Planners Associates, took home an IALD Award of Merit – one of two they received that evening. The lighting of Aman Tokyo, set atop a skyscraper in the middle of the city, takes Japanese-style design seriously. The team of designers from Lighting Planners Associates embrace the shifting, delicate balance of natural and artificial light in the space with a design that gives careful consideration to brightness and color temperature, as well as seasonal and daily changes. The 33F lobby is a grand space with luminous 3000K walls wrapped in washi glass – a layered laminate with Japanese washi paper pressed within its layers to diffuse light. The 6-story high, vaulted ceiling features a tent membrane made luminous by 4...

Next in Tokyo, Japan, we'll take a look at the construction site of Tokyo Sky Tree, the tallest broadcasting tower in the world. Our correspondent spoke with the designer of Tokyo Sky Tree on how it was built to resist even the strongest earthquake in the country. Tokyo Sky Tree will become the world's tallest free standing broadcast tower, and is revealing its secret in overcoming earthquakes in quake-prone Japan. Standing over 630 meters high, Tokyo Sky Tree was designed by Nikken Sekkei, a Japanese architecture firm experienced in building quake-resistant, high-rise buildings in Japan. The company developed a system of adding mass as a balancing weight to buildings, to control how they sway during an earthquake. Robots take centre stage at Tokyo's annual design expo. Full Story: Robots took centre stage of a Tokyo design expo on Monday as they sang, clapped, kicked, played guitar and even wooed visitors. More than 1,300 individuals or teams of designers, architects, musicians and artists participated in the Tokyo Designers Week 2014 with their the latest avant garde art and design works. Robots ranged from a choir of robot singers, Seamoons, performing their very mechanical harmony using artificial lungs and vocal cords to MMI, a guitar playing automaton. But the highlight of the show was Asuna, a humanoid android capable of delicate facial expression. Creator A-Lab, a robot developing company, called her "an everlasting girl". "At first, I thought she was human, but I soon figured out she was a doll," said 27-year-old visitor Kazunari Sato said, only to be corrected by Asuna. "Oh, sorry, an android," Sato said. Another 27-year-old visitor Yuki Ariga said the robot resembled a real woman. "She moves like a human and the texture is very like a real skin. She looks like a real one," Ariga said. Not everyone understood some of the artistic themes behind the robots. "I don't understand the artistic concept. I guess the one who made it has a talent that I don't have," said 33-year-old visitor Rumiko Kudo about a display called "Clapping Men." Kenji Kawasaki, chairman of the Design Association non-profit organisation, who first started the exhibition 29 years ago as small tents of affiliated shops, said the exhibition was given a new name this year to reflect its size and diversity - Tokyo Genius Expo. "From architecture to entertainment, a great number of artists are participating in this event, so we had to call it a 'genius' expo rather than a design, art, or music expo in order to embrace their diversity," Kawasaki said. Organizers expect about 120,000 visitors to visit the expo's 10 indoor and outdoor pavilions, in central Tokyo's Gaien Park from October 25 to November 3. The 10-day event was also held overseas in exhibitions in Milan and London and organisers are hoping to expand to New York next year. The estimated cost of the Japan National Stadium rose to 252 billion yen (£1.3 billion) last year and has seen opposition from many Japanese architects. The government has now decided to start again with a new design. But the London-based firm claims the increase is due to a 25 per cent rise in costs across Tokyo's construction market over the past two years. In the film, it says it will be impossible to create an equivalent stadium for less money. The 6-story high, vaulted ceiling features a tent membrane made luminous by 4200K and 3000K 32W FL tubes set at a 1.2m pitch. Controls gently shift the light during day and night, simulating daylight or providing softer lighting at dusk when the Tokyo nightscape is on display. To remove unnecessary shadowing and reduce reflection in the windows, on-site usage mockups and maintenance experiments helped designers rearrange luminaires and configure the system structure. “Dark finishes, linear lighting and backlit elements provide a result in keeping with the Japanese theme and the luxurious setting,” praised one judge. “The design succeeds in achieving a fine balance.” At the bar, designers carefully adjusted pendant height to reduce glare and reflection. To accommodate the dining tables, the designers minimized the vertical luminance level near the windows so guests can enjoy the view over Tokyo. Cove lighting around the columns and decorative lighting are moderated appropriately at dinner time. To ensure sufficient table lighting, glareless spotlights are mounted within ceiling louvers. “Clean, well-integrated lighting establishes links to Japanese tradition,” another judge wrote. “A consistent approach towards daylight strengthens the project’s sense of place.” Similarly, no downlights are used in the pool area to let guests fully relax and enjoy the Tokyo nightscape from the water. During the day, daylight is adjusted with blinds; at night, cove lighting and floor stands add soft ambiance. Underwater linear LEDs along the bottom edge of the pool add another indirect lighting element so the environment is not too bright at night. Diffused, indirect lighting provides the right light while making it difficult to see in from outside.

For the Tokyo Sky Tree project, the emergency staircase, situated in the core of the tower, acts as the mass, controlling sway during an earthquake. According to Nikken Sekkei, it's the first in the world. [Eizo Toyoda, P.R Manager, Nikken Sekkei]: "The core column and the surrounding steel frame are constructed separately. Therefore, when it shakes from an earthquake, they will shake in different ways. The system works by utilizing their different ways of shaking to repress the overall sway." Along the core, oil dampers are also installed to absorb shock. These act as cushions and are able to absorb swaying up to 50 percent. [Eizo Toyoda, P.R Manager, Nikken Sekkei]: "In the middle there's a space of about a meter, and from the height of 125 to 375 meters, we put six oil dampers. This is to control swaying so that the core column won't hit the inner part of the tower. They also serve to absorb the energy from an earthquake." The concept of using a central mass for the Tokyo Sky Tree was borrowed from traditional Japanese wisdom of building five-story pagodas. The longest standing pagoda in Japan is regarded to be at Horyu-ji Temple in Nara Prefecture, built in the 7th century. Tokyo Sky Tree will be opened to the public in May 2012 as Tokyo's newest landmark and popular tourist attraction.
