  • Zaha Hadid Architects launches campaign to reinstate scrapped Tokyo stadium design

Zaha Hadid Architects has released this movie detailing its design for the scrapped Tokyo 2020 Olympic stadium, which it describes as "the only way to achieve value for money in the market". The film, which is over 20 minutes long, explains the decisions made during the two-year-long design process that lead to the current proposal, which was dropped last month by Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe citing spiralling costs. It also argues that starting again with a new design will not save the Japanese taxpayer any money so it could end up costing more in the long term, and the firm urges the government to reconsider its decision. "The design should be seen as the only way to achieve value for money in the market," says Zaha Hadid Architects in the film. The estimated cost of the Japan ...

Robots take centre stage at Tokyo's annual design expo. Full Story: Robots took centre stage of a Tokyo design expo on Monday as they sang, clapped, kicked, played guitar and even wooed visitors. More than 1,300 individuals or teams of designers, architects, musicians and artists participated in the Tokyo Designers Week 2014 with their the latest avant garde art and design works. Robots ranged from a choir of robot singers, Seamoons, performing their very mechanical harmony using artificial lungs and vocal cords to MMI, a guitar playing automaton. But the highlight of the show was Asuna, a humanoid android capable of delicate facial expression. Creator A-Lab, a robot developing company, called her "an everlasting girl". "At first, I thought she was human, but I soon figured out she was a doll," said 27-year-old visitor Kazunari Sato said, only to be corrected by Asuna. "Oh, sorry, an android," Sato said. Another 27-year-old visitor Yuki Ariga said the robot resembled a real woman. "She moves like a human and the texture is very like a real skin. She looks like a real one," Ariga said. Not everyone understood some of the artistic themes behind the robots. "I don't understand the artistic concept. I guess the one who made it has a talent that I don't have," said 33-year-old visitor Rumiko Kudo about a display called "Clapping Men." Kenji Kawasaki, chairman of the Design Association non-profit organisation, who first started the exhibition 29 years ago as small tents of affiliated shops, said the exhibition was given a new name this year to reflect its size and diversity - Tokyo Genius Expo. "From architecture to entertainment, a great number of artists are participating in this event, so we had to call it a 'genius' expo rather than a design, art, or music expo in order to embrace their diversity," Kawasaki said. Organizers expect about 120,000 visitors to visit the expo's 10 indoor and outdoor pavilions, in central Tokyo's Gaien Park from October 25 to November 3. The 10-day event was also held overseas in exhibitions in Milan and London and organisers are hoping to expand to New York next year. Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA) have won the 2014 Daylight Award (Tageslicht-Award) for the design of the Rolex Learning Center EPFL in Lausanne. With CHF 100,000 prize money the award is the highest architectural prize in Switzerland. It promotes buildings with an innovative use of daylight. In the run-up to the award presentation, VernissageTV had a closer look at the building in Lausanne and met with Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa in Paris, to learn more about the concept of the building. In this interview, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa talk about the ideas behind the building, the challenges they were facing, the importance of natural light in their work, and how their building is received by the users of the building. Watch also: SANAA Retrospective at New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York City: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oxbMHeQjz8 The Daylight Award (Tageslicht-Award) is presented already for the fourth time by the Velux Stiftung in close collaboration with the Department of Architecture of ETH Zurich and the Swiss Council of Architecture. Previous laureates (winners and honorary awardees) are Annette Gigon and Mike Guyer, Peter Märkli, Peter Zumthor, James Turrell, Isa Stürm + Urs Wolf, Bob Gysin + Partner Architects BGP, Bearth & Deplazes Architects, Gramazio & Kohler Architects, Cruz & Ortiz, and Giraudi & Wettstein. The Rolex Learning Center EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland, is an extraordinary building in many ways, not least in regard to the use of natural light. Designed by Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA), the building is conceived as one single space with openness and extensive use of natural light in mind. It houses a multimedia library, student workspaces, a multipurpose hall, a food court, a bookshop, a parking, among other facilities. It opened on February 22nd, 2010. SANAA was founded in 1995 by Kazuyo Sejima (妹島 和世, born 1956) and Ryue Nishizawa (西沢立衛, born 1966). In 2004 they won the Golden Lion of the Venice Architecture Biennale for the most significant work, and in 2010, Sejima and Nishizawa were awarded the Pritzker Prize. Examples of SANAA's work include the Rolex Learning Center in Lausanne; the Toledo Museum of Art's Glass Pavilion in Toledo, Ohio; the Serpentine Pavilion in London; the Christian Dior Building in Omotesando in Tokyo; the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa; and the Louvre-Lens Museum in France. Cutaway of photographers 6. Wide of news conference 7. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Kengo Kuma, designer, newly selected design for 2020 Tokyo Olympics stadium: "Zaha's design was much taller in height compared to this one. We aim to follow a design which is ecologically friendly as much as possible. For that, we reduced the height as well as using wood as its construction material to give the feel of ecological friendliness and a sense of comfort for the people." 8. Wide of news conference 9. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Kengo Kuma, designer, newly selected design for 2020 Tokyo Olympics stadium: "The area surrounding the (construction) site is a green area, like a forest. So, this time, we weren't looking to create a remarkable or outstanding building, but we aimed for an architecture structure that integrates with its surrounding area, with the forest. And, I believe that will be the legacy (of this stadium) and that is the concept of 'Japaneseness' (in design)." 10. Various of Kuma and Japan Sport Council officials posing for photographers STORYLINE: Japan chose a scaled-down design on Tuesday for the showcase main stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, five months after scrapping an earlier plan by renowned architect Zaha Hadid as too costly. The new design, by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, will still cost 153 billion yen (1.26 billion US dollars) to design, build and maintain. The Hadid proposal would have cost 252 billion yen (2.1 billion US dollars), making it the most expensive stadium ever built. Kuma's combined steel and wood structure, with a relatively flat roof with shrubbery along its outer concourses, seems to echo traditional temple designs. It stands 50 metres (164 feet) tall, with a centre athletic ground sunk below the surface. Kuma appeared at a news conference where he talked about his design, saying it wasn't a construction made to impress people with its shape, but something that will blend in with the surrounding area. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory. The estimated cost of the Japan National Stadium rose to 252 billion yen (£1.3 billion) last year and has seen opposition from many Japanese architects. The government has now decided to start again with a new design. But the London-based firm claims the increase is due to a 25 per cent rise in costs across Tokyo's construction market over the past two years. In the film, it says it will be impossible to create an equivalent stadium for less money.
